The 2023 Acura RDX: A Stylish and Fun-to-Drive Luxury SUV

Share

The 2023 Acura RDX is a luxury SUV that offers an appealing combination of sporty driving dynamics, attractive styling, and value-oriented pricing. While it may not carry the same badge appeal as some of its European counterparts, the RDX stands out with its strong turbocharged four-cylinder engine, agile handling, and a practical approach to luxury. Although it might not match the lavishness of vehicles like the Genesis GV70 or the Volvo XC60 in terms of interior luxury, the RDX offers a comprehensive set of technology and convenience features as standard.

Under the hood, every RDX is equipped with a 272-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and the option of front-wheel drive or Acura’s all-wheel-drive system known as SH-AWD. The A-Spec version, which was tested, reached 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, positioning it in the middle of the pack among compact luxury SUVs. The RDX’s engine is responsive at lower speeds and delivers sufficient power for most driving scenarios. However, there could be improvements in the transmission’s downshifting speed, particularly when using the paddle shifters. While the engine produces a distinctive high-pitched sound during hard acceleration reminiscent of the NSX sports car, some of this noise is artificially enhanced through the audio system.

The RDX’s driving experience benefits from its agile handling, balanced dynamics, and the availability of features like adaptive dampers. The vehicle maintains a composed and comfortable ride, even with larger 20-inch wheels. The SH-AWD system aids quick directional changes, and the steering feels precise. Despite these positive attributes, the brake pedal’s inconsistency in firmness and responsiveness detracts from the overall experience.

In terms of fuel economy, the RDX offers competitive ratings in the mid-20s, with the front-wheel-drive model achieving slightly higher city and highway estimates compared to the all-wheel-drive version. The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, while the all-wheel-drive model sees a decrease of 1 mpg in both categories. Opting for the A-Spec package slightly reduces highway estimates to 27 mpg for the front-wheel-drive variant and 26 mpg for the all-wheel-drive model. Real-world testing of the RDX A-Spec SH-AWD achieved 26 mpg on the highway, matching its EPA rating.

Inside the cabin, the RDX offers a well-designed center stack with various buttons, a touchpad, and a rotary drive-mode selector. The A-Spec package brings unique red seats and distinctive styling elements. The cabin showcases good build quality and includes standard features such as ambient lighting, power-adjustable heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control. While not overly luxurious, the RDX provides a sporty experience while maintaining comfort and practicality. The rear seats can be easily released and folded flat to create extra cargo space, and the vehicle features a passthrough storage tray beneath the center console.

The RDX’s infotainment system consists of a 10.2-inch touchscreen that can be operated using both touch and a touchpad on the center console. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot, come standard. The optional Technology package adds features like built-in navigation, rear-seat USB ports, and a premium 12-speaker ELS Studio audio system, enhancing the overall tech experience of the RDX.
